We Don’t Just Fight Fire. We Study It.
FyreShield is built on science, not assumptions. Our partnerships with leading research institutions ensure that every system we deploy reflects the latest understanding of wildfire behavior, climate patterns, and property protection.
The FyreShield Research Institute
In 2024, we established the FyreShield Research Institute as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing wildfire science and making protection accessible to more communities.
Why a Research Institute?
Because wildfire isn’t just a technology problem. It’s a knowledge problem.
Every year, families lose homes not because protection doesn’t exist, but because they didn’t know what was possible. Insurance carriers cancel policies not because risk can’t be mitigated, but because they lack data to quantify that mitigation.
The FyreShield Research Institute exists to close those gaps – funding research, publishing findings, and ensuring that what we learn benefits everyone, not just our clients.
Our Research Partnerships and Collaborations
FyreShield doesn’t operate in isolation. We collaborate with the institutions doing the most important work in wildfire science:
Cal Poly WUI Fire Institute
The Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Institute at California Polytechnic State University leads research into how fire behaves where wilderness meets development. Their work directly informs how we design protection for properties in WUI zones.
What We’re Working On Together:
– Real-world testing of microclimate suppression effectiveness
– Data collection on ember behavior and ignition patterns
– Development of evidence-based protection standards
Desert Research Institute
DRI has studied fire and climate in the American West for decades. Their atmospheric science expertise helps EMBR understand how weather patterns, humidity, and wind interact to create fire conditions.
What We’re Learning:
– Predictive modeling for fire weather events
– Historical fire data analysis for regional risk assessment
– Climate adaptation strategies for long-term protection
UC San Diego WIFIRE Lab
WIFIRE uses artificial intelligence and real-time data to model wildfire behavior as it happens. Their technology powers some of the most sophisticated fire prediction systems in existence.
How This Helps You:
– EMBR’s threat detection integrates with cutting-edge fire behavior models
– Earlier warning means earlier protection activation
– Your property benefits from research that protects entire regions
Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation
The Moore Foundation has committed $200 million to wildfire resilience research. FyreShield is positioned at the intersection of academic research and real-world implementation – taking what scientists discover and putting it to work protecting homes.
Understanding Your Risk
Knowledge is the first line of defense. Whether or not you become a FyreShield client, understanding your wildfire risk makes you a better-prepared homeowner.
What is the WUI?
The Wildland-Urban Interface – or WUI – is where human development meets wildland vegetation. If your property borders forests, grasslands, or brush, you’re in the WUI.
Why it matters:
The WUI is where most wildfire destruction occurs. It’s also where most fire deaths happen. Properties in the WUI face risks that suburban or urban homes simply don’t.
In California alone, over 11 million people live in WUI zones.
The Three Ignition Threats
Understanding how homes ignite helps you understand how to protect them:
1. Direct Flame Contact
Fire reaches your structure and ignites it. This is actually the LEAST common way homes burn in wildfires.
2. Radiant Heat
Nearby burning vegetation or structures radiate enough heat to ignite your home without flames ever touching it. This can happen from 50+ feet away.
3. Ember Attack
Burning embers travel on wind currents – sometimes miles ahead of the fire front – and land on or around your home. This is how MOST homes ignite during wildfires. Embers find vulnerabilities: vents, gutters, wood piles, dry vegetation.
FyreShield addresses all three – but our microclimate approach is specifically designed to defeat ember attack, the threat that destroys the most homes.
The Data Behind EMBR
EMBR – our Environmental Monitoring & Behavioral Response AI – isn’t guessing. Every decision it makes is grounded in data:
What EMBR Monitors:
– Soil Moisture Levels – Ground saturation status across your property
– Ambient Humidity – Atmospheric moisture in your protection zone
– Temperature Differential – Your property vs. surrounding environment
– Wind Speed & Direction – Real-time and predictive patterns
– Regional Fire Activity – Active fires within threat range
– Weather Forecasting – Conditions that create fire risk
– Historical Fire Data – Past fire behavior in your specific area
What This Means For You:
When EMBR activates your system, it’s not reacting to a threshold being crossed. It’s reading the complete picture of your risk environment and responding with precision.
This is the difference between a smoke detector and a security team. One makes noise when it’s already too late. The other anticipates threats and neutralizes them before they arrive.
